The Timeless Wisdom of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”

In the realm of personal development and professional growth, Stephen R. Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" has established itself as a timeless masterpiece.

Rooted in the belief that genuine success is built on character and principles rather than quick-fix techniques, Covey’s magnum opus has become a best-selling go-to guide. Since its publication in 1989, this influential book, as well as Franklin Covey’s trainings and products, has continued to captivate people with its principles and practical, actionable wisdom.

In this book, Covey outlines seven key habits that, when cultivated and implemented, have the power to shape one’s life and career trajectory. To gain insight into the book’s impact, we turn to the perspectives of two experienced professionals: Ted, a business coach, and Sarah, an entrepreneur and business instructor.

TED: For me, the book’s concept of paradigms stands out as a significant re-revelation. Shifting perspectives and looking at issues from different angles can bring about transformative change, including self-reflection and understanding how my own viewpoint influences my perception. This insight has allowed me to better support my clients by encouraging them to examine their paradigms and consider their multiple roles in life.

SARAH: My introduction to the book came when I received Franklin Covey’s “What Matters Most” seminar as a college graduation gift. While revisiting the book recently in my business book club, The Book League (of which Ted is a member), I further realized how taking care of yourself (myself) is so critical for personal and professional success. Covey’s metaphor of nurturing the goose that lays the golden eggs is perfect. 

Ted and Sarah both acknowledge that the first three habits of private victory—Being Proactive, Beginning With the End in Mind, and Putting First Things First —require introspection and self-analysis. 

SARAH: Habits one through three helped me refine my values and prioritize my goals. One of my favorite things to do as a solo entrepreneur is to ask myself daily, “What is the one thing that I can do today that will make the biggest impact toward reaching my biggest goal?”

TED: I incorporate these habits into my coaching practice, encouraging clients to identify their priorities and consider the bigger picture. 

The duo also highlights the importance of the emotional bank account, a concept discussed in the book. 

TED: I appreciate the impact of positive reinforcement and focusing on strengths when dealing with my children, especially how it has improved our relationship and their performance.

SARAH: Habit five- Seek First To Understand and Then Be Understood – has transformed my approach to sales and communication. I learned to listen to what people want versus trying to push something on them that I think they need. Reading this recently had me recalibrate to take my listening even further. 

Ted and Sarah agree that “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” requires continual study and application. The book’s second half, which explores public victory and effective communication, holds tremendous value for mission-based people seeking to positively impact the world. 

TED: We all need to balance personal well-being and professional responsibilities.
